Speed Indicator Device & Village Gates
Duncton Parish Council has been progressing two projects aimed at improving road safety and encouraging drivers to slow down through the village.
New Speed Indicator Device (SID)
The Council has now ordered a new solar-powered Speed Indicator Device (SID) following approval from West Sussex County Council.
The SID will be used between two approved locations within the village, rather than remaining permanently in one position. Moving the device periodically allows us to target different approaches through the village and helps to maintain its effectiveness with regular drivers.
As well as displaying vehicle speeds to motorists, the SID can collect traffic and speed data. Once it is operational, the Council will be able to use this information to better understand vehicle speeds through Duncton and help inform any future discussions or road-safety initiatives.
We are currently working through the installation arrangements with West Sussex County Council, including the equipment and materials required, and hope to have the SID operational over the coming months.
Village Gates
Plans for new village entrance gates are also progressing.
West Sussex County Council has approved the installation of two gates at the southern entrance to Duncton, and the Parish Council has agreed the preferred design and wording:
“Welcome to Duncton – Please drive carefully”
We are now progressing the final arrangements required before installation.
You may remember that gates were also proposed for the northern entrance to the village. Unfortunately, difficulties with the proposed location mean that this part of the scheme cannot currently proceed.
Rather than delay the whole project, the Council has decided to move forward with the approved southern gates while continuing to consider what may be possible at the northern end in the future.
Both projects have involved quite a bit of work behind the scenes, particularly around suitable locations and the necessary highways approvals, so it is great to see them now moving forward.
